Hey Guys and Girls,

I leave Friday 11 am to go to Thailand for my bi-annual trip. Please train hard and respect assistant coaching staff when I’m gone. I should be updating gym web page with photos and videos of what’s going on over there. Every time I go the gym improves when I come back as I learn more and more of this crazy sport and go to a higher level of craziness myself. I’m taking Jason Mckellar this time for a week so wish him well and tell him a fond farewell! Lol

Having a bloody nose or busted mouth etc is just a part of sparring. However it is important to stop sparring and clean up.

Put all bloody paper towels etc in the big trash bag in the back. Don’t spit in the bathroom sink and get blood everywhere. Don’t blow your nose. This sprays blood.

Lysol all blood off the gear, the floor etc. If you are helping clean up your partner make sure you are wearing the gloves by the first aid kit and dispose of the gloves in the big trash can in the back, and wash your hands thoroughly.

If you are a bleeder by nature you need to wear headgear or let it heal up for a week or two before continuing to spar.

The switch kick is probably the most important kick in Muay Thai.

In Muay Thai you are supposed to constantly switch kick your opponent every time they step in range. This does two very important things. It stops your opponents advance towards you and breaks down their power hand.

As most Americans spar and fight with shin pads the effectiveness of this strategy is sometimes lost. This is unfortunate because two things happen. The first is that you have effectively limited a great stopping technique. This would be similar to not jabbing in boxing because we all wore 24 oz gloves and a jab didnt hurt. Lol. The second is that Americans have thought you can effectively block body kicks with your arms. This leads to broken arms down the road when the shin pads come off.

Do yourself a favor and always think things through like a puzzle. Ask yourself this question… Is a arm bigger or stronger then a leg? No. It’s not. So what to do? Lean back and take a half step back with your rear leg and let the kick go by and counter with your own. Don’t charge recklessly in. Feint forward movements and see if your opponent utilizes this weapon and try to time them. When your opponent advances towards you lay that shin across their power hand.. within a couple rounds that arm won’t have much power..Have fun.

When working Thai Pads it is important to realize a couple things.

1. Let your pad holder set the pace and wait for him/her to signal for the strikes. Don’t out hit your partner. It’s harder to keep up with pads then boxing mitts when you are holding them due to the weight.

2. Thai pad practice is not the same as bag work. When working with your partner make sure you are hitting at a level they can handle. Save the hardest hits for the Thai Bag if your partner is smaller then you.

3. Make sure you treat the pads as if you are sparring. Keep your hands up and maintain a good stance and striking distance.

4. Finally, remember it is a team effort to build your skill set. Time to time you will work pads with someone who is not as skilled as you. Be patient and teach. Don’t get frustrated and make them feel in adequate. There was a time when you weren’t skilled either. Help train each other and you will have a good pad partner down the road. Make them feel bad about the experience and no one will will want to train with you.
